Clinical Massage at Beaumont

Massage is manipulation of soft tissues with the hand or an instrument for relaxation – often called Swedish massage. The intent is to elicit a relaxation response.

Clinical Massage is the ability to treat specific conditions or diagnosis. It is still the manipulation of soft tissue but the focus is to achieve an outcome of therapeutic benefit.

Relaxation massage has clinical value, but a clinical massage is often area specific and not full body. Area specific is done for reasons such as addressing pain, an injury, or to increase range of motion.

BENEFITS

Benefits of clinical massage therapy:

  • decrease of pain and anxiety
  • decreased insomnia, muscle spasms and tension headaches
  • increased sense of well being and relaxation
  • increase of endorphins (feel-good hormones) in the brain

All of the licensed massage therapists in Integrative Medicine have received advance education in massage for the oncology patient and survivor. If you have ever had a cancer diagnosis, in the past of current, it is imperative to seek a massage therapist with this training.

Oncology patients may experience these benefits:

  • profound decrease in pain and anxiety
  • decreased nausea, insomnia, depression, and "pins and needles" feeling in hands and feet
  • improved sleep
  • a change in scar tissue, and increase range of motion
  • lymphatic wellness, and decrease risk of lymphedema

An oncology trained massage therapist will know how to adjust the treatment session to accommodate the side effects of treatment.

Lymphatic WellnessThis gentle, relaxing, non-invasive technique will assist the body in maintaining a healthy lymphatic (immune) system.  The technique can help renew energy and maintain balance in the body.
Neuromuscular TherapyFocuses on trigger points in muscles. A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot that may be tender and have a refer pattern. A trained therapist can help alleviate the tenderness and improve function.
Massage CuppingHas been around for thousands of years, although only becoming popular in the United States in recent years. Cupping works on the basis of negative pressure. Plastic or silicone cups are place on the body after soft tissue has been warmed; the cups are used to glide over the skin. There are great benefits for helping reduce scar tissue.
