Knee Arthroscopy

A knee arthroscopy is when a special instrument (arthroscope) is inserted into the knee joint through two small incisions. The surgery can be done for diagnosis or to remove loose tissue or ligaments, shave the knee cap, remove parts of the membrane that secretes fluid that lubricates the joint. This is an outpatient surgery.

After Surgery

You will may have a bulky gauze dressing secured with ACE wraps or you may have only steri-strips over the small incisions. When sitting, keep your foot up at the level of your heart to keep the swelling down.

To make sure the swelling does not cause your bandage to decrease your blood flow to your foot, watch your toes to make sure they are warm to touch and when squeezed, they go from white back to pink in color. Additional information about what precautions and safety measures you may need to take will be given by your doctor.

Everyone is different in how they react to surgery. If you have questions or concerns, talk to your doctor.
